Israeli airstrikes
disrupted a brief lull in fighting on the Gaza strip after a twelve hour
ceasefire formatted by Egypt under the directive of the UN, after the Security
Council called for “an immediate ceasefire”. According to Israel’s chief
military spoke person, the ceasefire is conditional and reasoned as an
“unlimited truce — The IDF is free to attack after any fire if there is any”.Hamas accordingly
stated that it wanted a 24 hour truce to mark the Muslim holiday of Ed-al Fitr,
which commenced Monday. Shortly thereafter, the fighting temporarily
relinquished; however, diplomatic tensions remained high as Israel continued to
stake out a vast network of Hamas tunnels that are supplying the Palestinian
war effort.
While
a significant drop in rocket attacks followed calls for the ceasefire, at least
twelve rockets were fired by Hamas towards Israel, which responded with the
airstrikes, destroying two rocket launchers and a weapons manufacturing
facility in northern and central Gaza.The international consensus remains
hopeful that the lull in fighting will permit a more long-term
sustainable truce to end the massive casualties; particularly, more than 1000
mostly civilian fatalities that Palestine has suffered since the beginning of
