Boko Haram has troubled Nigerian people and the government for years. The rebel group, which operates mostly in Northern Nigeria, is known for the abductions, assassinations, and bombings that it has carried out in many parts of the country.Boko Haram has always sought to fight until Nigeria becomes an Islamic state. In keeping with the violent confrontations with which it is known, the rebel group recently carried out twin bombings in Abuja, which led to the death of 75 people. The mastermind of the twin bombings mentioned above, Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche, then fled to Sudan where he has been in hiding ever since. Interpol then issued a warrant for his arrest. Aminu was then arrested in Khartoum in May 2014.
Thus
far, Boko Haram has been responsible for the death of thousands of people in
Nigeria. Although the group, which was founded in 2002, operates mostly in
Northern Nigeria, the entire country is in a constant state of fear not knowing
which part will be attacked next. When the Islamist group was founded, it’s
first objectives was to oppose Western education. In fact, the Hausa meaning
for the words Boko Haram is “Western education is forbidden”. The group’s
objectives seem to have evolved with the passage of time.Nigerians have been
wondering why the government is incapable or unwilling to arrest members of the
Islamist group. Some people even believe that the group enjoys the backing of
some very powerful people in Nigeria, thus cannot be destroyed.
